The Difference Between BFD, PFD, and P&ID: The Process Document Hierarchy Every Engineer Should Know

BFD, PFD, and P&ID are three process documents with progressively increasing levels of detail. BFD provides a big-picture overview of process unit blocks without equipment detail; PFD adds mass/energy balances, operating conditions, and main equipment symbols; while P&ID is the most detailed document, containing all instrumentation, complete piping routes with specifications, and control logic. All three are used sequentially throughout the EPC project lifecycle.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming PFD and P&ID are interchangeable documents, when in fact they serve different purposes and levels of detail.
  • Producing a P&ID without first finalizing and freezing the PFD, resulting in cascading revisions.
